Maple Leafs’ Oliver Ekman-Larsson exits game vs. Oilers with lower-body injury
The Toronto Maple Leafs just can’t seem to stay healthy.
Though the J.T. Miller trade saga has finally come to an end, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin confirmed on Saturday that the talks between himself and Miller had been active long before Friday’s move.
For two months, in fact.
“This was a conversation between myself, J.T. and his agent that started about two months ago, with his health and the environment we had… during the time and during the discussions leading up to yesterday, I felt that he probably needed a fresh start,” Allvin told reporters. “This was the best option for him and the Vancouver Canucks.”
The GM attributed the move to what was best for both the player and the team, though much has been said about the rumoured rift between Miller and centreman Elias Pettersson.
Allvin did acknowledge the tension was there, but pointed out that personality clashes are not uncommon at the NHL level.
“You have a 23-man roster and I’ve been on teams where there are different personalities,” he said. “J.T. Miller, the reason why he’s good in the league is he’s super competitive. He’s walking the fine line at times and I also think he’s been dealing with a lot of other things.
“I wouldn’t just say it’s about one or two players — it’s about 23 men. You hold each other accountable. We’re not running a country club here. We’re running a professional hockey team. The players are demanding a lot from themselves and each other so it’s going to be a competitive environment.”

Allvin also stresses that this wasn’t a choice that the organization made between its top two centres — this was a trade that was likely going to be made regardless, for the sake of both Miller and the Canucks, that was mutually agreed upon.
Miller has struggled on and off the ice this season. A 103-point centre last year, he’s seen his production dip considerably this season, with nine goals and 35 points in 40 games with the Canucks, including extended streaks without registering a point. He also took a 10-game leave of absence for personal reasons in November.
Between that and the constant noise of a Canadian market, it seemed like Miller was prepared for a fresh start — even if he became one of the most prolific Canucks’ scorers during his time in Vancouver.
“This was something that two months ago, in the discussion I had with J.T., we felt for his health and for the team’s best that this was probably a direction we would go,” Allvin continued. “He never requested a trade. During these two months, this was the best for him and his health and family, and for the Vancouver Canucks.”

As for Pettersson, both he and Allvin will admit that he’s not played up to his standards. In 45 games, the 26-year-old has 11 goals and 33 points — not horrendous numbers to be sure, but also a far cry away from his consecutive point-per-game seasons.
He’ll be asked to step up both offensively and as a leader in the absence of Miller, which Allvin is trusting him to be able to accomplish.
“Elias is committed to doing the right things, finding his way to play to the level where we all know he’s capable of. He shows signs of going the right direction,” Allvin said. “I know that he is doing the extra work that is needed and I hope that he’s one of (the players) that is going to continue to carry on the team and lead the team the right way, playing the right way. We need his contributions going forward.
“That’s part of being a professional hockey player, especially when you commit to that kind of contract. My expectation is higher on him than anyone else on the team. I expect him to meet my expectations and I expect him to meet his own expectations. So far he has not done that. If you talk to him, he’s disappointed. He’s aware of it. I know he’s capable and he’ll work at it.”
The Canucks, who lost in their first game without Miller on Friday night, will look to get back into the win column on Sunday evening — potentially with the help of their newly acquired players.
