Yankees’ Judge expects to be ready for opener after MRI of abdomen
New York Yankees star Aaron Judge expects to be ready for opening day on March 28 after an MRI exam of his abdomen.
New York Rangers rookie Matt Rempe was suspended four games after being ejected for a hit to the head of the New Jersey Devils’ Jonas Siegenthaler on Monday.
Rempe was given a misconduct for elbowing Siegenthaler during the final minute of the second period in the Rangers’ 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils.
As Siegenthaler dumped the puck in from the neutral zone, Rempe came across the ice and hit the Devils defenceman in the head with his elbow as the two collided against the boards. Siegenthaler was slow to get up and did not return to the game.
“While we acknowledge that Siegenthaler is stopping up as he dumps the puck in, this is not a case in which a sudden movement by the player receiving the check turns a legal check into an illegal one,” the NHL said in a video announcing the suspension. “Nor do we believe this is accidental contact as a player is bracing for impact with the boards or another player.
“Rempe is clearly committed to throwing a check on this play and having ended up at an angle of approach that will take him across the front of Siegenthaler’s body and potentially miss Siegenthaler entirely, Rempe chooses to flare his elbow both up and away from his body in a dangerous fashion, driving it directly into the head of Siegenthaler with substantial force.”
Rempe will forfeit $17,083.32 as a result of this suspension.

Things were already heated between the Rangers and Devils, which stemmed from their previous meeting on Feb. 22 when Rempe hit Devils forward Nate Bastian in the head. Rempe received a match penalty but was not suspended for the hit.
Devils tough guy Kurtis MacDermid, who was acquired in a trade after the Feb. 22 game, attempted to fight Rempe after the hit on Siegenthaler but was held back by the officials and given a 10-minute misconduct. As Rempe left the ice, he mocked MacDermid by waving at him.

“There’s a right way to go about things and a wrong way,” MacDermid told reporters after the game. “I kind of lost a lot of respect for him tonight.”
He added: “He’s a young kid in this league, he has a lot to learn still. You don’t do things like that in your first year in the league, especially. Like I said, I lost quite a bit of respect for him tonight.”
The 21-year-old Rempe has played in only 10 games but has already made a name for himself, racking up 54 penalty minutes and four fights since the Rangers called him up from the minors last month.
The Rangers and Devils face off for the final time during the regular season on April 3 in New York.
